Google Play Now Has Gift Cards

The search giant will offer Google Play gift cards in $10 and $25 increments, according to the photos obtained by Android Central (as shown in the image above). The latest Google Play Store app update’s code also contains references to support for gift cards as well as wish lists, reports Android Police.
The move is probably related to the recent success Google had in Google Play sales after gifting $25 to anyone that purchased a new Nexus 7 tablet. That said, giving someone a Google Play gift card would also help boost digital media sales through the Google Play store.
The gift card packaging lists movies, music, books, apps, and “more” along the bottom. I did find it a bit odd that it didn’t mention games, since mobile gaming is rapidly becoming a very lucrative area of digital media sales.
Read more on how to redeem them.

Neo Geo Gold X launches December 6 for $200

The Neo Geo X has had its release date confirmed as December 6 worldwide, and that very high price has been reduced to $200. Still high, right? The deal has been sweetened somewhat, however, as each unit will ship with a replica Neo Geo console and joystick.
$200 is still very high for a portable gaming unit that only plays retro titles. The hardware isn’t anything special, either. It uses a 4.3-inch display, has 2GB of on-board storage, uses a 2200mAh rechargeable battery, and has a yet-to-be-confirmed combination of ARM chip and RAM.
The games you get pre-installed seem to have changed since March and include:
  • 3 Count Bout
  • Alpha Mission II
  • Baseball Stars II
  • Cyber-Lip
  • Fatal Fury
  • Fatal Fury Special
  • King of Monsters
  • Last Resort
  • League Bowling
  • Magician Lord
  • Metal Slug
  • Mutation Nation
  • Nam-1975
  • Puzzled
  • Real Bout – Fatal Fury Special
  • Samurai Shodown II
  • Super Sidekicks
  • The Art of Fighting II
  • The King of Fighters ’95
  • World Heroes
Depending on how Blaze choose to sell the device (direct-only, or with retail partners), I expect we’ll see it discounted quite heavily.

Shamoon virus targets energy sector infrastructure

The attack, known as Shamoon, is said to have hit "at least one organisation" in the sector.
Shamoon is capable of wiping files and rendering several computers on a network unusable.
On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia's national oil company said an attack had led to its own network being taken offline.
Although Saudi Aramco did not link the issue to the Shamoon threat, it did confirm that the company had suffered a "sudden disruption".

the company said it had now isolated its computer networks as a precautionary measure.
The disruptions were "suspected to be the result of a virus that had infected personal workstations without affecting the primary components of the network", a statement read.
It said the attack had had "no impact whatsoever" on production operations.
Rendered unusable On Thursday, security firms released the first detailed information about Shamoon.
Experts said the threat was known to have had hit "at least one organisation" in the energy sector.
"It is a destructive malware that corrupts files on a compromised computer and overwrites the MBR (Master Boot Record) in an effort to render a computer unusable," wrote security firm Symantec.

Seculert, an Israel-based security specialist, also analysed the malicious code and concluded that it had unusual characteristics compared with other recent attacks.
"The interesting part of this malware is that instead of staying under the radar and collect information, the malware was designed to overwrite and wipe the files," the company said.
"Why would someone wipe files in a targeted attack and make the machine unusable?"
Shamoon is the latest in a line of attacks that have targeted infrastructure.
One of the most high-profile attacks in recent times was Stuxnet, which was designed to hit nuclear infrastructure in Iran.
Others, like Duqu, have sought to infiltrate networks in order to steal data.

Steam Not Just For Games, Anymore!

Valve , today announced the first set of Software titles are heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC and Mac games.

The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.

More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.

"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."

OTA Update Center brings over-the-air updates to any ROM developer

The folks at the OTA Update Center have worked out the supporting infrastructure and methods to offer a free OTA service to any ROM developer, so that hackers and modders can enjoy that fuzzy feeling an update brings as well. An app will be installed into the system that communicates with the servers to pass out OTA updates to anyone using the ROM. For the end-user, it's a simple and impressive way to keep the OS on your phone up-to-date.

The real difference here is to the developers. They no longer need to host files or insert framework for an FOTA system into their ROM, and instead can use the supplied tool with a few edits. This will get everything up and running with  minimum of extra code, and provide a sort of standard that all developers can follow. We like standards. Developers like standards. Users like things that "just work", and standards allow that to happen easier. Devs can goto OTA Update Center .

Blizzard's Battle.net Was Hacked

If you’re a PC gamer and play World of Warcraft, Diablo or Starcraft, you might want to log into Battle.net and change your password immediately. The company behind it, Blizzard, has confirmed that the site has been hacked.

Here’s what Blizzard’s co-founder and President Michael Morhaime had to say about the hack:
This week, our security team found an unauthorized and illegal access into our internal network here at Blizzard. We quickly took steps to close off this access and began working with law enforcement and security experts to investigate what happened.
At this time, we’ve found no evidence that financial information such as credit cards, billing addresses, or real names were compromised. Our investigation is ongoing, but so far nothing suggests that these pieces of information have been accessed.
The company says that a list of email addresses for gamers outside of China were accessed. For those in the US, Australia, New Zealand and Latin America, your personal security question and mobile and dial-in authentication information was also accessed. Crap. Luckily, no credit card information was thieved…that Blizzard knows of yet.
Blizzard doesn’t seem overly concerned: “Based on what we currently know, this information alone is NOT enough for anyone to gain access to Battle.net accounts.” it said in its release. I think it’s too early to be so sure, considering that its investigation has just begun.
The company will be asking users to change their secret question information as well, but the first step is to change your password immediately:
We also know that cryptographically scrambled versions of Battle.net passwords (not actual passwords) for players on North American servers were taken. We use Secure Remote Password protocol (SRP) to protect these passwords, which is designed to make it extremely difficult to extract the actual password, and also means that each password would have to be deciphered individually. As a precaution, however, we recommend that players on North American servers change their password.

Square with Geo fencing is now at US based Starbucks

Source - venturebeat.com

Earlier today, buzzy mobile payments start-up Square, Inc. announced a partnership with Starbucks to process credit card transactions at 7,000 Starbucks shops across the U.S., and to make Square’s mobile phone app an option for payment, as well.

Customers will be able to use the free Pay with Square smartphone app, too, which usually enables a user to walk into a Starbucks store, activate a tab on the app that virtually announces their arrival at that location, and pay for a coffee just by walking up to the register and saying their name. With Starbucks, it will involve showing a 2-D bar code. Dorsey said today that he hopes to see more use of the “geo-fencing,” hands-free technology in the future. For more on how this works look here .

For now, Square will only work at U.S.-based Starbucks locations. But Square hasn’t hidden its intent to expand overseas, and partnering with Starbucks is certainly a step in that direction. “We’re pushing hard to bring Square outside of the United States, and you can expect to hear more on that,” Dorsey said. Square-Starbucks payments are for iOS and Android smartphone users only.

How secure is Square at Starbucks? Dorsey said that Square isn’t adding additional layers of security for the Starbucks transactions, and that Square continually verifies the protections it has put into place for transactions. He did say, however, that Square would be pushing harder for people to use a legitimate photo of themselves — not a random avatar — in the Pay with Square app, for verification purposes; and that users have the option to set a PIN code on the app to prevent a fraudster from using it. A representative from Square added that the company will be working to integrate “chip and PIN” technology as that standard for payments makes its way here to the U.S., and as Square makes its way abroad.

Amazon Fixes BIG Account Security Issues Quick And Quietly

Previously, Amazon allowed people to call in and change the email address associated with an Amazon account or add a credit card number to an Amazon account as long as the caller could identify him or herself by name, email address and mailing address — three bits of personal information that are easily found online.

The security gap was used by hackers, one of whom identified himself as a 19-year-old going by the name “Phobia,” to gain access to Honan’s Amazon account on Friday. Once Phobia and another hacker gained access to Honan’s Amazon account, they were able to view the last four digits of a credit card linked to the account.
The hackers then used those four digits to trick Apple customer service into thinking it was dealing with Honan. Apple customer service then gave the hackers a temporary password into Honan’s Apple ID, which the hackers used to wipe his iPhone, iPad and MacBook, and gain access to a number of email accounts as well as his Twitter account. More on that article here.

Dropbox attacked again

Several weeks ago, Dropbox announced it was investigating some suspicious incidents on its network. The online storage company, which has been a phenomenal success among consumers and small businesses, said it had “brought in a team of outside experts” to investigate the incidents.
And today the other shoe dropped. In a post on the Dropbox blog, VP of Engineering Aditya Agarwal acknowledged that the worst-case scenario had occurred:
Our investigation found that usernames and passwords recently stolen from other websites were used to sign in to a small number of Dropbox accounts. We’ve contacted these users and have helped them protect their accounts.
A stolen password was also used to access an employee Dropbox account containing a project document with user email addresses. We believe this improper access is what led to the spam. We’re sorry about this, and have put additional controls in place to help make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Keeping Dropbox secure is at the heart of what we do, and we’re taking steps to improve the safety of your Dropbox even if your password is stolen…
Those are reassuring words. They would inspire more confidence if they didn’t echo Dropbox’s equally confident reassurances the last time the company suffered a potential security breach.

So if you must countine to use Dropbox, only if you really have to create very lost and secure passwords with Lastpass , if you havent already and get BoxCryptor that will Encrypt your files on the fly to and from Dropbox
